Throwback Thursday Party

You’ve seen the hashtag. Heck, you’ve probably used it more times than you could count on one hand. But have you thrown a Throwback Thursday party? You’ve been to a million luau and fondue parties, but throwing a #tbt party provides a fresh take on the classics. Especially if weekends are difficult to come by or if it’s the summer, throwing this party on a Thursday night can be extremely helpful.
However, the most important part of your party is your focus. When you put “throwback” on party invitations, a person’s mind could think medieval or Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. I’m no historian, but these actually have nothing in common. So, for your Throwback Thursday party, pick a decade, an era--honestly, really any focus other than the general past. It could be the 20s, 90s, your childhood, your teen years, whatever you please! For my party, I opted for an early 2000s approach. While your specific food, decor, activities and music will vary by era, I shared my early 2000s theme below. Food: Two words: frosted and cookies. You can never go wrong with these favorites! I also set out a bowl of Ring Pops and Scooby-Doo fruit snacks.

Consider some other fun snacks: ice cream, popsicles and Bugles (because who didn’t put these on their fingers as kids!). For appetizers/mini entrees, I chose Bagel Bites and PB&J sandwiches cut into triangles. While it’s good to carry out your theme throughout the night, you don’t want overkill. So, I also served sliced potato skins along with fruit. As for beverages, Kool-Aid Jammers and Capri Suns did just the trick! For dessert, we served s’mores brownies... Need I say more?! Try the recipe here! Decorations: Before you even think about pulling out those Michaels coupons or hopping on to Amazon, look under your bed, in the storage room, in desk drawers and in your closet. Ecstatic. I was ecstatic when I found old Jonas Brothers, High School Musical and Zac Efron posters--and, a Hannah Montana calendar (on which I’d written my test dates, my performance on that test and the day National Treasure 2 came out on Red Box...?!). Bam! Instant decor right there. Set up a wall to place your fun posters, calendars and really, anything you can scrounge up all to make a fun photo booth. Also, choosing a color like a bright blue can unify your party from party plates to balloons.

Activities: First and foremost, you need to reward your guests for digging through their closets to find old J. Bieb’s tees and tutus. Make mini goodie bags full of candy, little trinkets (which you will find under your bed!), friendship bracelets, glitter gel pens, etc to reward the best dressed guy and gal! Consider having sidewalk chalk, beach volleyball, four square, kick ball, hopscotch, Twister, Apples to Apples or Just Dance out to play with your guests. At my party, we enjoyed an animated American Idol sing-along game, which was quite interesting and very dated! Offering glow sticks for your guests also throws the night back to elementary school skate nights. Buy these in bulk here. But there’s a good chance the best part of your night will be from the next category.

Music: While playlists may not be the focal point of many parties, it can easily establish your theme in a TBT party. Nothing unites a group of people more than throwback songs that everyone knows and can dance along with. My party included the Jonas Brothers (because I’m sure I wasn’t the only one who called myself Mrs. Jonas at one point... right?!), Hannah Montana, High School Musical, Camp Rock and Cheetah Girls. Your guests will start singing at the top of their lungs once “Irreplaceable” by Beyonce and “Potential BreakUp Song” by Aly & AJ come on. Other top hits you may want to consider to get your guests out of their chairs: “Cha Cha Slide” by DJ Casper and “Cupid Shuffle” by Cupid. Wardrobe: I sported a pair of overalls, a pink and blue tie-dye tee and a side ponytail in a silver-sequined scrunchie. As for my guests’ wardrobe, some of my favorites would have to be a Cheetah Girls tee, Aeropostale graphic tee and denim skirt.
More Inspiration: I scoured Pinterest for so many ideas, and I'd recommend taking a look at these links to get some inspiration for your TBT party. Some of these were really helpful for me!

Last thing to add: throwing a TBT party may mean some fun throwback gifts! I received a Justice swim tee and a Tinker Bell singing bracelet. On that note, those are even more reason to throw a Throwback Thursday party to relive the good ole days! Best of luck!
